BC Transit is bringing back regular fall service levels in the northern capital for its post-secondary students.
With the College of New Caledonia, UNBC and School District 57 about to kick off the 2018-19 academic year, a number of routes have been reinstated, which begin today.
Communications Manager Jonathan Dyck explains why the route demand changes between the school and summer seasons.
“A lot of the routes we change service levels for especially in the summer months are for post-secondary institutions or schools in general, the reason why we change them during the summer is so that we can make sure to offer more service in the fall.”
“We see different levels of demand throughout the year when schools and post-secondary institutions are in session we do see higher service demands so what we want to do is matchup that service level with what we are seeing in terms of ridership.”
Students who attend CNC and UNBC also benefit from another resource available to them while using public transit so they can get around fairly smoothly.
“Another benefit for post-secondary students in Prince George is that they do have access to a U-Pass and we know that is a popular product. Post-secondary students do rely on transit to get to and from their classes or other activities within the community.”
The routes to see increased service once again include:
- 12 Parkridge
- 15 Downtown/UNBC
- 17 UNBC
- 18 Spruceland
- 55 Victoria
- 96 Kelly Road via North Nechako and 97 Kelly
In addition, BC Transit is providing new buses to the following communities:
- Prince George (3 new 35-foot buses)
- Smithers (3 new Spirit of Mobility Buses)
- Hazleton (2 new Spirit of Mobility Buses)
The new fleet can be seen on local roads in August and September depending on the community.
The new buses are part of a $160 million dollar investment from the federal and provincial governments to support BC Transit projects since June of 2016.
