Temporary extreme weather shelters coming for the PG winter

The BC government is opening temporary shelter spaces across the province to help people living on the streets over the winter season. Over 1,400 temporary shelter spaces and more than 750 extreme weather response shelter spaces will be available in approximately 65 communities.

Prince George is receiving the extreme weather shelters at three locations for a total of 40 spaces at 1188 6th Ave (15 spaces), 140 Quebec Street (15 spaces), and 144 George Street (10 spaces). These spaces will be available from November 1st to March 31st, 2019, and will open when a community issues an extreme weather alert. Communities will decide what warrants an alert and how many spaces to open on a given night depending on need.

“Temporary and extreme weather shelters are crucial to ensuring the health and safety of people living on the street and getting them out of the cold and wet weather,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, in a statement.

“These shelters not only have the potential to save lives – they also assist people in accessing the support and services they need to achieve housing stability.”

Other nearby communities receiving extreme weather response shelters include:
