Is winter not coming? City says they’re prepping PG roads as normal

Blake McIntosh, Roads & Fleet Manager with the City of Prince George | Kyle Balzer, My PG Now

A significant snowfall has yet to happen in Prince George.

Despite playing the waiting game, City Winter Crews are fully staffed and trying to prepare the roads, in hopes of being 100% ready when the snow eventually flies.

For now, Roads and Fleet Manager Blake McIntosh says residents can expect, what he calls, shoulder maintenance.

“When we have weather like this, we can carry on some of the Fall maintenance activities, and that’s generally what will be performing. This can be anything from gravel road grading, to asphalt and pothole repairs, to the clearing of overgrown ditches.”

In February, PG got more than three feet of snow, which led to more than 13,000 dump-truck loads of snow was taken to disposal sites.

That’s enough to fill the CN Centre four times.

On the topic of budget operations, McIntosh says money is still on par even with the lack of snow to haul away.

“We approximately at about 113% of the 2018 budget. So once staff is on, we’re trying to give them work and keep them busy and if it’s not snow-related, it will go to normal operating budgets.”

He believes another El Nino year is coming with freezing rain as a strong possibility and encourages everyone to get winter tires on their vehicle soon.

The City is also reminding residents of the winter parking bylaws currently in effect.
