Pre-NorthWorks Workshop aimed to assist students with job recruitment

“I think what this really does is it helps candidates differentiate themselves from others,” said CEO of the Prince George Chamber of Commerce Todd Corrigall.

The Chamber has teamed up with the city’s two post-secondary institutes – College of New Caledonia (CNC) and the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) – to organize a Pre-NorthWorks event on Thursday, February 28 at UNBC’s Canfor Theatre.

“It’s giving them access to some unique opportunities to engage with some thought-leaders in the community; get some information, tools, and tricks heading into the career fairs,” stated Corrigall on the purpose behind holding such event ahead of the NorthWorks Career Fair.

A group of local professionals has been gathered to directly inform local post-secondary students on topics not usually taught in the classroom.

Heather Sadler Jenkins, 3 Green Lights, the Northern Health Authority, TaxWerx, UNBC Co-operative Education, and WorkSafeBC have volunteered to present topics such as occupational health and safety, job interview preparation, networking techniques, resume preparation, employment standards and contracts, and getting along with co-workers.

“This is a unique partnership for our students as we prepare them for successful careers and leadership roles after they graduate,” said UNBC President Dr Daniel Weeks.

“It’s another example of how the University is staying connected to the Chamber of Commerce and the business community to support positive learning opportunities in Prince George.”

The workshop is anticipating to provide better insights for young employees of what is both expected and accepted in today’s workforce.
