Brendan Pawliw

Since moving to Prince George in 2015, Brendan has covered local sports including the WHL’s Prince George Cougars, Prince George Spruce Kings, UNBC Timberwolves, Cariboo Cougars AAA, and Northern Capitals U18 female hockey teams. Career highlights include play-by-play during the Spruce Kings' BCHL championship runs in 2018 and 2019, including the Doyle Cup win. He also covered the 2019 National Junior A Championship, the 2017 Telus Cup, the 2022 World Women’s Curling Championship, and the 2022 BC Summer Games. Brendan is the news voice on 94.3 The Goat and Country 97 FM, reporting on crime, real estate, labour, and environmental issues. Outside of work, he officiates box lacrosse and fastball, sits on the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame board, and co-hosts the Hockey North podcast.

Seasonal July makes way for an unsettled start to August

As for the BC Day long weekend, Loney noted there is some instability in the forecast with a chance of showers or thundershowers for today and Saturday before clearing to mainly sunny skies on Sunday and Monday. Temperatures are expected to range between 23 and 26 degrees.

Ambulances Paramedics of BC dealing with member mental health crisis due to suicides

This year, nine paramedics have passed away. The agency noted while some of the deaths were due to health issues or accidents, many of their members died by suicide – deaths likely connected to the job’s many stressors.

Team BC selects several PG athletes for Canada Summer Games

In Artistic Swimming, Kennedy Moore of PG is the lone northern to be selected. Zahra Ngabo of the Northern Bounce Academy will participate in basketball. Team BC’s men’s U-23 softball team has no shortage of local flavour, which includes Caleb Falk, Aidan Heggelund, Joel Henry, as well as Cameron and Colby Jefferies.

Prince George tallies nine illicit drug deaths in May and June

Province-wide, 292 people lost their lives due to toxic drugs in May and June – that equates to nearly five deaths per day on average. So far this year, Northern Health has tallied 67 toxic drug deaths, 23 of which were recorded in Prince George.

Sour grapes? BC wine industry up in arms over ‘value added fee’ in Alberta

This despite a trade deal between both provinces that allows Albertans to buy directly from wine producers in B.C.. In April, Alberta spiked its flat fee on wine while also introducing a "value added charge" for any bottle worth more than $11.25 - a move Wine Growers of BC CEO Jeff Guignard isn't happy about.

Man hiking Great Divide Trail found safe by PG Search and Rescue

According to a Facebook post, he was hiking the Great Divide Trail over a two-week period, which involved significant route finding and bushwacking when he became separated from his partner.

Regional District unveils hazard exposure data during phase one of Climate Adaption project

Several cooling spaces available in Prince George

According to the city, residents will have the chance to cool down at either of the Public Library Locations (Bob Harkins and Nechako), the Aquatic Centre and Canfor Leisure Pool as well as the Pine Centre Mall.

Homestead Days hosting old-fashioned activities this weekend

The organization’s longest running event celebrates life on the homestead over a hundred years ago by taking in the sights, sounds, and activities of a bygone era. During the holiday Monday, the black powder shooters aim and fire at targets in the back field.

WorkSafeBC encourages employers to protect workers from heat-related illnesses

Between 2020 and 2024, WorkSafeBC accepted 315 heat-related injury claims, with the highest numbers in transportation, public works, construction, food services, and film and television production.

PG Fire Centre bracing for flare ups during mid-week heat wave

There are currently 41 wildfires burning in the Prince George Fire Centre, 37 of which are either being held or under control. So far this year, 712,253 hectares has burned in our region.

Prince George-Vanderhoof area included in B.C. heat warning

The warnings extend north to the North Thompson, 100 Mile, Cariboo, Prince George, and Stuart - Nechako areas, which could see highs up to 34 degrees. The BC Wildfire Service says the combination of rising temperatures, fuel drying and more dry lightning increases the probability of new wildfires starting this week.

Miracle Theatre founders honoured with Medal of Good Citizenship

Prince George's Ted Price and Anne Laughlin are being recognized for their contributions to the community with one of the highest honours one can receive in British Columbia.  The Miracle Theatre founders are among 18 individuals in the province who will be receiving a Medal of Good Citizenship in 2025. 

19,000 BC Hydro customers in PG area to be affected by outage Monday afternoon

BC Hydro says roughly 19,000 customers will be without power in the Prince George area this afternoon.  According to BC Hydro, this is due to a vehicle incident last night (Saturday) on Highway 16 West near Art Knapp Plantland that resulted in extensive damage to BC Hydro infrastructure. 

Hockeyfest 2025 to help raise funds for cancer equipment for UHNBC

September 19-21 will bring plenty of hockey action to the CN Centre, both inside and outside the arena.  The Spirit of the North Healthcare foundation is hosting Prince George's first Hockeyfest in the CN Centre parking lot, a travelling street hockey tournament fundraiser that weekend. 

Quarter of drivers admit to nodding off behind the wheel: ICBC

A new Ipsos survey done for ICBC says about a quarter (24%) of B.C. drivers have admitted to momentarily nodding off while driving in the past year, while half (52%) have driven while tired or drowsy.  ICBC is reminding drivers that long drives and hot weather can be a dangerous combination, leading to fatigue and serious crashes.
