City council has approved the decommissioning of the Canada Games Plaza Ammonia Plant during Monday’s 2018 Budget meeting.
The expected cost to keep the ice plant operational for the remainder of the 2017/18 season was expected to be $58,900.
“In the end, having looked over what the initial plans were and the hope that there would be lots of people down there using the facility,” explains Councillor Garth Frizzell.
“When it came down to it, you look at five people a day [using the facility on average] when it’s open three to four months a year, you look at the cost, it just didn’t make sense.”
One recurring factor through discussions of the issue was the diminished popularity of the rink, partly due to the success of the Ice Oval.
“We hear about the value of refrigerating the Ice Oval and the costs that would mean so whenever we make decisions like this it’s always about how this will help the people of Prince George, you gotta get the most bang for your buck,” Frizzell says.
“We’ve got a lot of parks downtown, we’ve got a lot of facilities downtown, but we’ve got to put our money into the ones that are making the use for the people.”
The motion was carried unanimously.
