Two Rivers Gallery appoints new Director of Public Programs

After an extensive Canada-wide search, Two Rivers Gallery has hired Derrick Chang to take on the role of Director of Public Programs.

Chang is currently located in Vancouver working for a small regional gallery in Alberta, he will be starting with Two Rivers on July 5th.

“A small, intimate setting is a really refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of the city. I’m really looking forward to time to connect one-on-one and personally with people rather than getting swallowed up in the chaotic craziness of a bigger city like Vancouver,” he said.

He says he’s never ventured into Northern BC before but he is excited to familiarize himself with the community as he will be holding a public position.

“I’m excited to get to know the community, getting to know the Indigenous community of the Lheidli T’enneh is really important to me as well,” he explained.

While he doesn’t have any big plans for the Gallery just yet, he says he will be taking his time to get to know his fellow colleagues, community members and to familiarize himself with Prince George’s culture.

“What drew me to Prince George is I’ve been really interested in ecological art and art that considers the environment in place that we’re located and kind of like a very local understanding of art,” he added.

As a curator, writer, and facilitator, Chang has been working to support arts and cultural development for nearly ten years.

He has a Masters of Art History with a focus in Critical and Curatorial Studies from UBC, and two Bachelor’s degrees from Queen’s University, one in Art and one in Education.

Throughout his career, he’s examined ethics and politics in artistic practices and has dedicated his career to supporting community initiatives and artistic voices.

“I am looking forward to finding out what makes Prince George life and culture unique and special. Public programs play a vital role in bringing to life the value that the experience of art
plays both inside and outside the gallery walls,” Chang added.
