The votes are in, and Trent Derrick will be the NDP candidate for the Cariboo-Prince George riding.
The preferential vote began in Williams Lake and Quesnel earlier this weekend, with voting wrapping up in Prince George on Monday night.
Roughly 176 NDP members turned out to vote.
Derrick is a member of the Gitxsan first nation, wants to create jobs in the Cariboo-Prince George by cutting the small business tax rate from 11 to 9 percent.
He beat out former city councillor Debora Munoz and Laura Zimmerman of Williams Lake, but thinks all three of them were strong candidates.
“What we’ve done is created excitement in this party,” Derrick proclaimed after learning he earned the nomination, “We’ve gone out and talked to our members and they’re excited, we have a plan, and I feel we are going to win this election because of that.”
The other declared candidates are Conservative Todd Doherty, Liberal Tracy Calogheros, independant Sheldon Clare, the Green Party’s Richard Jacques, and Adam de Kroon of the Christian Heritage Party.
