Annual Junk in the Trunk sale coming up this weekend

It is a yard sale like no other.

The annual Prince George Junk in the Trunk sale takes place in the CN Centre parking lot on Saturday (April 27).

Each year, thousands of people peruse dozens of sellers’ second-hand goods in the CN Centre parking lot.

This year’s event will run from 9:00 to 1:00 Saturday morning.

Tire Stewardship BC is expecting to be very busy at the sale.

“We always take away at least one truckload of tires from that event – about 1500 car tires fit into one truck,” Rosemary Sutton, the Executive Director of Tire Stewardship BC told My PG Now. “They are not all car tires that we pick up, but it is a very popular event.”

The tires that are dropped off at the sale and any other tires recycled to Tire Stewardship BC are transformed into crumb rubber at Liberty Tire in Delta.

Sutton said about 40% of that rubber is then sold to Northwest Rubber Matts in Abbotsford, who turn it into “gym flooring, arena flooring, truck bed liners – a whole range.”

“You tire is gone in BC, recycled in BC, and a significant portion of them are also made into products in BC,” she explained. “Liberty Tire recycled about 60,000 tones of material a year.”

Anyone who does not want to wait until the sale, or can’t make it, can recycle their tires at 24 different locations around Prince George.

You can find a map here.

Sutton added the organization also recycles rims.

A second Junk in the Trunk sale is being planned for the fall, Tire Stewardship BC will also be present then.
