PG Sports Weekend Wrap—(Nov 27-29)

The Prince George Cougars took three out of a possible four points in their home double against the Kamloops Blazers. The Cougars followed up a 4-3 shootout loss (where they blew a 3-1 third period lead) with a convincing 7-3 victory. Attendance was 3,256 Friday followed by 3,333 Saturday. The 13-9-0-1 Cougars are 3rd in the BC Division, three points ahead of the Blazers. P.G. has earned at least a point in each of its last seven home games. The Cougars host the 12-11 Portland Winterhawks Tuesday and Wednesday. The Winterhawks hold down the final playoff spot in the WHL Western Conference.

The Major Midget Cariboo Cougars split with the Okanagan Rockets at Kin 1. Cariboo took the opener 2-1 before Okanagan responded with a convincing 6-1 win. Both teams are tied for 3rd in the 11-team BCMML with 25 points after 20 games. The 11-6-3 Cougars continue a 10-game homestand against the 2-14-4 Thompson Blazers Saturday night at 7:15 and Sunday morning at 9:15 at Kin 1.

The Prince George Coast Inn Midget Tier 1 Cougars dominated their own seven team tournament going 5-0 and outscoring their opponents by a combined 34-3 margin.
They dumped the Okanagan Hockey Academy Edmonton prep team 5-1 in the final. The Coast Inn midgets sport a 31-1-1 record this season, including four
tournament wins.

The Prince George Spruce Kings went just 2-9-1 in the month of November. They are coming off a 6-3 loss to the Coquitlam Express, their 4th straight defeat. After 30 games the Spruce Kings are 7-21-0-2 leaving them 10 points behind the Express for the final playoff spot in the Mainland Division and Coquitlam has three games in hand. This week the Spruce Kings start a four game homestand when they entertain 11-12-1-3 Coquitlam Thursday and the 17-10-0-1 Nanaimo Clippers on Friday.

The UNBC Timberwolves men’s and women’s basketball teams earned a split of their two Canada West games against the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary. The UNBC men are 3-5 while the lady Timberwolves are 1-7 as of the semester/Christmas break. In men’s action, UNBC won the opener 77-73 before Mount Royal came back for a 88-73 triumph. In women’s play, the T-wolves posted a 67-60 victory with the Royals taking the second game 76-69. UNBC resumes league play when they host MacEwan on January 8th and 9th.

UBC Thunderbirds running back Brandon Deschamps of Prince George is going out a winner in CIS football. Deschamps had nine carries for 79 yards including a 44 yard run for a touchdown in the second half helping UBC capture the Vanier Cup in Quebec City, 26-23 over the defending champion Montreal Carabins. The Thunderbirds celebrated their first football title in 18 years after connecting on a game ending 20 yard field goal.

Duchess Park earned bronze at the Provincial junior boys volleyball championship in Kelowna. Duchess lost the semi to Richmond Christian 2-0 but came back to beat Abbotsford 2-0 in the third place match. College Heights ended up 15th and D.P. Todd 18th out of 24 teams.
