Douglas Porter may not speak a lot of French but he plans to let his lacrosse skills do all the talking.
The 18-year old local product who suits up for the Co-op Petroleum Stylers in Prince George Senior Lacrosse has committed to the Bishop’s University Gaiters.
Porter heads to the Sherbrooke, Quebec, institution next month and is looking forward to the culture change.
“I am definitely excited to get to see more of Canada that I haven’t seen and play for the team and meet some new people and getting an education out of it. It’s definitely going to be good.”
At what point did playing lacrosse at the university level become a possibility.
“When I started playing BMS (Burnaby Mountain Selects) I started getting more into looking at the schools because coaches started to come out and watch our team down in New York and San Francisco and I just got more interested as I got older and was something that I could try to do once I definitely thought I could go and play,” says Porter.
Porter ended the regular season second in team scoring for the Stylers with 29 goals and 27 assists in just 11 games.
He trailed fellow teammate Matt Rochon who led the team offensively with 77 points including 52 goals.
Porter joins a Bishop’s team that went 8-6 during the 2016 U-Sports season.
The Stylers finished the PGSL season with a record of 6-9 and will face off against the RPR Mechanical/BX Pub Bandits in a best-of-three first round playoff series next week.
