(Sweden scored the only goal in the second half. Canada’s Janine Beckie was stopped on a penalty kick which would have tied the game. Sweden advances to the quarterfinals against Germany Saturday (9:30 AM PT).

WHL:

The Prince George Cougars will open their 2019-20 regular season on Friday, September 20th when they host the Western Conference champion Vancouver Giants.

The entire WHL schedule will be released Wednesday.

The Cougars will also play in the Victoria Royals home opener on Friday, September 27th.

PG Cougars goalie Taylor Gauthier, who was not drafted, will attend the Boston Bruins development camp.

 

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings announced on Monday the commitment of two more players, an 18-year-old forward and an 18-year-0ld defenceman.


NHL
:

The St. Louis Blues rewarded coach Craig Berube for guiding the team to the Stanley Cup.

Berube has signed a three-year contract. Terms have not been disclosed.

Washington Capitals defenceman Brooks Orpik has announced his retirement after 15 NHL seasons.

The 38-year-old Orpik won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009 and with Washington last year.

The Vegas Golden Knights have re-signed forward William Karlsson to an eight-year contract extension worth an average of $5.9 million per season.

The Vancouver Canucks have met with soon-to-be free agent defenceman Tyler Myers.

The 29-year-old Myers had 31 points in 80 games in the 2018-19 season with the Winnipeg Jets.

There are reports that he is looking for a seven-year contract in excess of $50 million.

 

NBA:

Pascal Siakam of the Toronto Raptors was named the most Most Improved Player as the NBA handed out its individual awards.

Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks was voted MVP after averaging 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game.

Two-time NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard is expected to decline his 2019-20 player option for $21.3 million and hit the market.

The Toronto Raptors are the only team that can offer the 27-year-old Leonard a max contract worth $190 million over five years.

Leonard averaged 30.5 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 24 playoff games.

The NBA’s free-agent negotiating period begins Saturday at 3 p.m. PT.

Leonard is expected to meet with the LA Clippers on July 2nd.

 

MLB:

New York Yankees  10  Toronto  Blue Jays  8

The Yankees extended their home run streak to 27 games, tying the record set by the 2002 Texas Rangers.

The 29-50 Jays visit the AL East-leading Yankees again tonight as Toronto plays its 80th game of the season.

A total of 19 teams (13 in the men’s division and six in the women’s division) have been confirmed for the 50th annual Canada Day Fastpitch Tournament at Spruce City Stadium.

Participants are from B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Prince George has two teams in each division: Big Guy Lake Kings, and Custom Edge Sports (men) plus Falcon Contracting Little Chiefs and PG Chaos (women).

Games begin Friday at 3:00 p.m. with the final scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 5:00.


CFL: 

Week three of the CFL season begins Thursday with 2-0 Edmonton at 1-0 Winnipeg (5:30 PT).

The Friday game has 0-1 Montreal at 2-0 Hamilton (4:30).

The 0-2 B.C. Lions play in Calgary against the 0-1 Stampeders Saturday (4:00).

PG SENIOR LACROSSE:

The best-of-three PG Senior Lacrosse semi-finals begin next month (with all games at 8:00 PM).

Northland Nissan Assault will battle the Lumberjacks July 3rd in Mackenzie, July 8th at Kin 1 and if needed, July 10th at Kin 1.

Westwood Pub Devils will face the RPR Mechanical/JR Construction Bandits July 4th, 9th and if necessary, 11th at Kin 1.

Winners meet in the best-of-five final on July 16th, 18th, 22nd and if needed, 24th and 25th.
