HARTLEY’S SPORTS SHORTS: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22ND

WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars have their first midweek games of the season.

The (3-6-0-1) Cougars host the (2-6-1-2) Swift Current Broncos tonight and the (6-4-0-1) Kelowna Rockets on Wednesday.

The Broncos have lost all four on their five-game BC road trip, although two of those games have been decided beyond regulation time.

The Cougars are tied with the (2-4-2-1) Seattle Thunderbirds, two points behind the (4-4-1) Victoria Royals for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Forward Holden Kodak and defenceman Marco Creta, acquired from the Winnipeg Ice in the Jackson Leppard trade, are expected to make their PG debut.

Leppard scored a goal and added an assist in his first game with Winnipeg on Sunday, a 7-2 victory over the Saskatoon Blades.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The (5-7-2-1) Prince George Spruce Kings visit the (7-10) Powell River Kings Thursday, the (6-11) Victoria Grizzlies Saturday and the (10-6-1-1) Cowichan Valley Capitals Sunday afternoon.

The next home games for PG will be Nov. 1st and 2nd against the Langley Rivermen.

Prince George is 4th in the Mainland Division, three points behind the (8-8) Langley Rivermen, eight back of the (9-5-2-1) Chilliwack Chiefs and nine behind the (11-3) Coquitlam Express.

BC Major Midget League: 
(Cariboo Cougars)

The Cariboo Cougars visit the (2-7-0-1) Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday night at 5:00 and Sunday morning at 10:00 in Richmond.

The (6-1-0-1) Major Midget Cougars are in 4th place in the 11-team BCMML, a point behind the (7-3) Vancouver NE Chiefs, three back of the (8-2) Vancouver NW Hawks and seven behind the (10-0) Okanagan Rockets.

NHL: (4 Monday games)

Gustav Nyquist scored on a penalty shot in overtime for the Blue Jackets against the Maple Leafs.

The (7-1-1) Avalanche suffered their first loss in regulation time.

The (5-3) Vancouver Canucks are 2-1 on a four-game road trip that concludes tonight in Detroit against the (3-5) Red Wings who have lost four straight.

Vancouver’s next home game will be played Friday against Washington.

There are a total of 10 Tuesday games in the NHL with Montreal and Ottawa the only Canadian teams idle.

Calgary hosts Washington, Edmonton plays at Minnesota, Winnipeg entertains LA and Toronto is on the road at Boston.

Canada West Soccer: (UNBC Timberwolves)

The (3-7-4) UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team earned the sixth and final playoff spot in the eight-team Canada West Pacific Division.

UNBC will play the (8-5-1) Manitoba Bisons (the 3rd place team in the Prairie division) Friday (11 AM PT) in Calgary with the winner to advance to the quarterfinals Sunday against the (10-1-3) Calgary Dinos.

The UNBC men’s soccer team missed the playoffs after finishing the regular season last with a 4-8-3 record in the seven-team Canada West Pacific Division.

NFL: (Week 7)

New England Patriots  33  New York Jets  0

Jets QB Sam Darnold threw four interceptions and lost a fumble as the (1-5) Jets lost their eighth straight to the (7-0) Patriots.

The (6-0) 49’ers are the only other unbeaten teams in the NFL.

CFL: 

The Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders are tied for first place in the CFL West with each team having two games remaining.

Both teams are 11-5 and two points ahead of the (10-7) Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Stampeders beat the Blue Bombers 37-33 Saturday to conclude week 19.

The (13-3) Hamilton Tiger-Cats have the best record in the league.

The (5-12) BC Lions, coming off a 27-19 Friday loss to Saskatchewan, will play their final game on Saturday, Nov. 2nd when they host Calgary.

Week 20 starts on Friday with Calgary at Winnipeg (5:30 p.m. PT).

There are three games on Saturday, including Saskatchewan at (8-8) Edmonton (4:00 p.m. PT).

Also on Saturday, Hamilton plays at Montreal (10 a.m. PT) and Ottawa visits Toronto (1:00).

MLB: (World Series)

The World Series will open tonight (5:08 PT) with the Washington Nationals at the Houston Astros.

Gerrit Cole (19-0 in his last 25 starts) takes to the mound for the Astros against Max Scherzer of the Nationals.

The Astros are the largest favourites entering the World Series since 2007, according to Sportsoddshistory.com.

NBA:

The Toronto Raptors begin defence of their NBA title when they host the New Orleans Pelicans tonight at 5:00 (PT).

The Pelicans are without the top-pick in this year’s Draft, Zion Williamson. for 6-to-8 weeks due to a knee injury that has required surgery.

The other game on the opening day of the season has the LA Lakers at the LA Clippers.

 

Tennis:

Bianca Andreescu has become the highest-ranked Canadian female tennis player in WTA Tour history.

The 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., jumped to No. 4 in the rankings today (Monday) which moves her one spot ahead of her career-best No. 5 ranking, which tied a Canadian record set by Eugenie Bouchard in 2014.

Milos Raonic reached No. 3 in the men’s rankings in 2016, the best ranking achieved by a Canadian.
