Canada West Basketball: (UNBC Timberwolves)

(Women’s quarterfinal in Calgary)

Calgary Dinos  87  UNBC Timberwolves  68

The Timberwolves, who had their 9-game winning streak snapped, have had their season come to an end.

They finished 11-9 in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs.

Maria Mongomo, in her final season with the UNBC Timberwolves women’s basketball team, has been named a Canada West first-team All-Star.

Mongomo led the Conference in scoring, averaging just over 20 points a game.

Mongomo’s teammate, Madison Landry, was voted to the third All-Star team. Landry averaged 19 points a game.

Fareed Shittu of the UNBC men’s basketball team was named to the Canada West All-Rookie team.

WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars are in the state of Washington for a couple of weekend games south of the border.

The (16-30-3-4) Cougars visit the (37-12-3-1) Everett Silvertips tonight and the (22-27-3-3) Seattle Thunderbirds on Sunday.

The Cougars, riding a 4-game losing streak, are 11 points behind Seattle for the last Western Conference playoff spot.

Prince George has 15 games left (including six at home) and Seattle has 13 remaining.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings conclude their regular season by hosting the (45-9-1-1) Coquitlam Express tonight and Saturday.

Coquitlam has the best record in the BCHL.

The (18-31-3-4) Spruce Kings will finish 15th out of 17 in the overall BCHL standings and will play the (35-16-2-2-1) Smoke Eaters in the first round of the playoffs.

The best of seven series will feature a 2-3-2 format starting in Trail on Feb 28th and 29th and returning to PG on Monday, March 2nd.

The Smoke Eaters are second in the Interior Division.

Forward Nick Poisson of the PG Spruce Kings is one of three finalists for the BCHlL Most Sportsmanlike award.

Poisson has 47 points and 20 penalty minutes in 49 games this season.

Winners of the 2019-20 BCHL awards will be announced next week prior to the start of the playoffs.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars at Kin 1)

The Cariboo Cougars put a six-game winning streak on the line when they host the (26-8-0-2) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Kin 1.

The Major Midget Cougars also entertain the eighth-place North Island Silvertips on Feb. 29th and March 1st to conclude their regular season.

The (24-10-1-1) Cougars are in 5th place in the 11-team league, just four points behind second-place Fraser Valley.

There are 7 Friday night games in the NHL with the Alberta teams both on home ice.

Edmonton entertains Minnesota and Calgary hosts Boston.

The (32-22-6) Vancouver Canucks are 2-2-1 on a six-game homestand that concludes Saturday against Boston.

The Canucks are 3rd in the Pacific Division, a point behind Edmonton, two back of Vegas and two ahead of Calgary and Arizona.

The Anaheim Ducks have dealt winger Ondrej Kase to the Boston Bruins in return for a 2020 first-round draft pick, forward David Backes and, defenceman Axel Andersson.

The 24-year-old Kase has 23 points in 49 games this season.

Curling:

Ontario, Manitoba and Wild Card (Jennifer Jones) have all clinched a playoff spot at the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw.

All three teams are 8-1 with two draws remaining in the Championship Pool (today at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. PT).

Northern Ontario is fourth at 6-3 followed by Saskatchewan and P.E.I. at 5-4.

Both B.C. (Corryn Brown of Kamloops) and Canada are 4-5.

B.C. beat Nova Scotia 5-4 in a tie-breaker Thursday morning before losing 8-4 to Manitoba Thursday afternoon and 7-6 to Northern Ontario in an extra end Thursday night.

The playoffs, involving the top four teams, begin Saturday with the final set for Sunday.

The Canadian winner will advance to the World Women’s Curling Championship in Prince George March 14th-22nd.

BC Winter Games:

Fort St. John is hosting the BC Winter Games this weekend.

More than 1,000 athletes between the ages of 9 and 17 years are competing in 15 different sports.


Jr Basketball Provincials:

The Langley Events Centre will host the Jr. Boys and Jr. Girls basketball provincials.

32 teams, including PGSS, are entered in the Jr. Boys tournament which runs from Saturday to Tuesday.

24 teams, including College Heights and Duchess Park, participate in the Jr. Girls championship which tips off Wednesday and continues until Feb. 29th.

 

NBA:

The Toronto Raptors end an 8-day layoff when they host the (22-33) Phoenix Suns tonight.

The (40-15) Raptors are second in the NBA Eastern Conference.
