WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars have a home and home this weekend against the BC Division-leading Blazers: tonight at CN Centre and Saturday in Kamloops.

The Cougars have just one win in their last eight games after dropping back-to-back 5-4 decisions to Kelowna on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The (17-32-4-4) Cougars are 11 points behind the (23-28-4-3) Seattle Thunderbirds for the last WHL Western Conference wild-card spot.

Prince George has 11 games remaining (including four at home) and Seattle has 10 left (including five at home).

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

It is playoff time in the BCHL.

The Prince George Spruce Kings battle the Trail Smoke Eaters in a best-of-seven BCHL Interior Division first-round series.

In the 2-3-2 format, the first two games will be played in Trail tonight and Saturday night.

The series shifts to P.G. for games three and four Monday and Tuesday and a fifth game, if needed on Thursday.

The defending champion Spruce Kings finished last in the Mainland Division and 15th out of 17 in the overall league standings with a record of 18-32-3-5.

The (36-17-2-2-1) Smoke Eaters placed second in the Interior Division with 33 more points than Prince George.

Trail won all three of the regular-season meetings between the two teams, 3-0 on Sept. 28th, 7-4 on Oct. 5th. and 9-2 on Jan 29th.

The Schedule for the series is as follows:

Game 1 – Friday, February 28th  – Prince George @ Trail – 7 PM
Game 2 – Saturday, February 29th  – Prince George @ Trail – 7 PM
Game 3 – Monday, March 2nd  – Trail @ Prince George – 7 PM

NHL: (Canadian teams went 3-2-1 on Thursday with Edmonton idle)

Ottawa Senators  5  Vancouver Canucks  2

Bobby Ryan notched a hat trick in his first home game in more than three months.

Ryan entered the joint NHL/NHLPA assistance program three months ago after admitting to having a problem with alcohol.

J. T. Miller and Tyler Toffoli tallied for the (34-23-6) Canucks, who are 1-1 on a four-game Eastern trip that will conclude on the weekend Saturday in Toronto and Sunday in Columbus.

Vancouver is tied with Edmonton for 2nd in the Pacific Division, four points behind Vegas and one point ahead of Calgary.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars at Kin 1)

The Cariboo Cougars will conclude their regular season with home games against the (12-23-3) North Island Silvertips Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 9:00 a.m. at Kin 1.

The (25-10-2-1) Cougars are in 5th place in the 11-team league, a point behind the (27-9) Vancouver NE Chiefs, two back of the (26-9-1-2) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds, and three behind the second-place (27-9-1-1) Vancouver NW Hawks.

North Island will finish in 8th place, earning the final playoff.

High School Basketball:

The Langley Events Centre is hosting the provincial high school girls basketball championships with play to conclude on Saturday.

Duchess Park is 1-1 in 3A Girls (68-58 win over G.W. Graham followed by 76-49 loss to top-ranked Abbotsford)

College Heights is 2-1 and Duchess Park 0-2 in Jr Girls.

PGSS is 0-2 in 4A Girls.

Nechako Valley is 1-1 in 2A Girls.

 

Curling:

The Tim Hortons Brier will begin this weekend in Kingston, Ontario.

B.C. is represented by 9-time provincial champion Jim Cotter, and his team from the Okanagan.

Cotter will play his first game Saturday (11 a.m. PT) against the Northwest Territories.

Prince George continues to prepare to host the World Women’s Curling Championship on March 14th-22nd.

13 teams are entered with the opening draw at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 14th.

The first game for Canada will go at 7:00 p.m. on March 14th against Scotland.

There are three draws a day from March 15th to 20th that run at 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Semifinals will be played on March 21st at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. with the Medal games to follow on Sunday, March 22nd at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Canada will be represented by 32-year-old Kerri Einarson, and her Manitoba team from the Gimli Curling Club.

 

NBA:

The Toronto Raptors host the (19-38) Charlotte Hornets tonight (4:30 PT).

The Raptors, second in the Eastern Conference, have won 17 of their last 19 games.

NFL:

Media reports indicate Tom Brady is operating under the belief that he will enter free agency to play somewhere other than New England in the 2020 season.

While Brady has his eyes on free agency, there is still a belief in his circles that the Patriots will have their opportunity to convince him to stay.

The 42-year-old Brady cannot begin negotiating with other teams until March 18.
