School District 57 public meeting: COVID setbacks and facility repairs

Outside of the new online format, School District 57’s virtual Board of Education Public Meeting was marked by challenges associated with COVID-19.

“These are uncharted times,” said Board Chair Tim Bennett.

In two instances the Board acknowledged the disappointment of the Graduating Class of 2020, who are facing decidedly abnormal circumstances in their final semester of public education.

Among other COVID-cancellations: the District Student Advisory Council had a planned collaboration with “Cops for Cancer”, an ongoing partnership between local law enforcement and the B.C. Cancer Society.

Necessary facility repairs were also considered at the meeting.

The Board discussed capital funding agreements for boiler replacements, upgrades, and repairs in four elementary schools (Ron Brent, Nukko Lake, Hart Highlands and Valemont).

Furthermore, the board acknowledged intentions to focus part of the Annual Facility Grant’s 5-year on roofing as numerous facilities continue to age.

Although engagement around the re-naming of Kelly Road Secondary School (KRSS) is planned for April 28th, the topic was mentioned at the meeting.

Bennett acknowledged that much of the public input received for tonight’s Board meeting revolved around the new Kelly Road facility, which is set to open by September.

The Board also voted to cancel the planned meeting in Mackenzie, hosting a public engagement session in its place. This change was meant to allow the KRSS-focused meeting to occur in Prince George.

However, concerns about COVID-19  may result in Mackenzie’s public engagement being carried over to the next school year.

Finally, the Board also approved a 60-day review of their new policy manual.
