Winter Games—Feb 21

Team BC finished week one of Canada Winter Games competition with 41 medals including 12 gold, 16 silver, and 13 bronze.

–Emily Dickson and Claire Lapointe of Prince George plus Tekarra Banser of West Kelowna combined to give BC gold in the women’s biathlon 3 x 6 km relay. The 17-year-old Dickson, who moved to PG from Burns Lake three years ago, racked up four medals at the Games. Earlier, she took gold in the 10 km pursuit, silver in the 7.5 km sprint and bronze in the 12.5 km individual.

–In the men’s 3 x 7.5 km biathlon relay, the BC team, which included Arthur Roots and Bobby Kreitz of Prince George, ended up 4th.

–Carolina Hiller of PG, in her last race in Fort St John, ended up 5th out of 32 in the long track speed skating 3000 metres. Sara Spence of Kamloops captured gold, her 6th medal of the Games (2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze). The 17-year-old Hiller finished with three silver medals, placing 2nd in the 1000 metres, mass start and team pursuit.

–Carolina’s twin brother, Nicolas Hiller, was 10th out of 31 in the men’s long track 5000 metres.

–Quebec won a thriller in the women’s hockey gold medal game, 2-1 over Ontario in overtime. Bronze went to Alberta 5-3 over Saskatchewan. BC settled for 6th, losing to Manitoba 4-0.

–Manitoba took gold in ringette, defeating Ontario 6-4 in the final. New Brunswick captured bronze, 7-6 over Quebec. BC finished 6th after a 7-0 loss to Alberta. (Sydney Irving of PG was a member of the BC team).

–Manitoba came out on top in men’s curling. Manitoba crushed Ontario 10-2 in the gold medal match. BC (skipped by Tyler Tardi of Surrey) took bronze by dumping Saskatchewan 9-2.

–Quebec earned gold in mixed wheelchair basketball at Duchess Park. Quebec beat Saskatchewan 69-57 in the final. Bronze was taken by Alberta 69-54 over PEI. BC (which includes Avril Harris and Joel Ewert of Prince George) wound up 6th after a 66-65 loss to New Brunswick.

–BC alpine skiers racked up four medals in ski cross at Purden. Katie Fleckenstein (West Vancouver) and Nicole Mah (Vancouver) earned gold and silver in the women’s race. In the men’s ski cross, Devin Mittertreiner and Ryan Finley earned silver and bronze. Mittertreiner and Finley live in Calgary but train and compete in Fernie.

–BC finished 4th in the men’s short track speed skating 3000 metre relay race at Kin 1.
