Police searching for maroon pickup driver linked to multiple arson incidents

Police in Prince George are now investigating multiple grass fires that have been deemed suspicious.

All of the incidents occurred during the dead of the night on April 23rd and 27th.

The first was reported at 11:30 pm when a caller reached out to RCMP about two small grass fires in the ditch near Cranbrook Hill Road and Otway Road.

A witness said he saw a maroon coloured truck parked on the side of Otway Road, and when it pulled away, the ditch went up in flames.

He managed to put the fires out before they grew any larger, police did make extensive patrols of the area but were unable to locate the maroon truck.

A few days later on April 27th, RCMP were called to another incident at Moore’s Meadow shortly before 1:00 am.

Fire crews were dealing with two fires burning in the grass and trees, witnesses reported seeing a 2017 or newer maroon pickup truck back up into the area before the fires started.

On that same day at 2:30 am, police were called to a third fire on Kelly Road North near Fergusen Lake Road.

A passing truck driver noticed the fire and reported it.

“The fires were all started far enough off the roadway to not be caused by an accidental spark, and investigators did not find evidence of any cigarette butts in the dry grass to suggest the fires were caused by discarded cigarettes,” said PG RCMP Cst. Jennifer Cooper.

Witnesses described a maroon coloured truck at the locations that two of the fires were started.

“Police would like to speak with anyone who might have information about this truck or the registered owner,” added Cooper.

The investigation is ongoing and now considered arson.
