Cougars and their leading scorer Koehn Ziemmer are red-hot

Aaron Rodgers made headlines during the 2021 NFL regular season when the Green Bay Packers quarterback stated that he “owned” the Chicago Bears.

The Prince George Cougars likely would not want to say it but so far during the 2021-22 WHL regular season, they have “owned” the Victoria Royals.

The two teams have met seven times, all won by the Cats, outscoring the Royals by a total margin of 29-9.

Wednesday night before 1,426 fans at CN Centre, P.G. beat Victoria 4-1.

The score was a bit misleading as the Royals surrendered two empty goals (from Jonny Hooker and Riley Heidt) in the final 15 seconds of the game.

The red-hot Koehn Ziemmer led the way again as he tallied twice, just over four minutes apart in the first period.

He would add a late assist to give him six points in the sweep of the doubleheader.

Ziemmer also had two goals and one helper in Tuesday’s 5-3 victory over the Royals.

The Cougars win streak has reached four and in those games, Ziemmer has nine points, including seven goals.

The 17-year-old Ziemmer has scored in each of his last seven home games.

Since December 14th, Ziemmer has scored 13 goals which is the most out of any player in WHL.

On the season, he leads the team in scoring with 33 points (17 goals) in 36 games.

Ty Young made 22 saves as Prince George outshot Victoria 35-23.

“When you’re winning hockey games, you have to find different ways to win. I liked a lot of things about our game tonight. Ty Young made the big saves when he had to, and the overall team effort was there. That’s another two big points for us,” said Cougars’ General Manager & Head Coach Mark Lamb.

The (17-17-1-1) Cougars are 3rd in the B.C. Division and 6th in the Western Conference, four points ahead of the (15-17-2-0) Vancouver Giants and eight in front of the (12-18-4) Royals, who have lost five in a row.

Prince George will host the B.C. Division-leading Kamloops Blazers on Friday in the first of a home and home.

They also meet Saturday in Kamloops.
