Olympics:

Despite being outshot 53-27, Canada beat the United States 4-2 in women’s Olympic hockey.

Ann-Renee Desbiens got the victory with 51 saves.

Canada is 4-0 and the U.S. 3-1 with both teams advancing to the quarterfinals this week.

The Canadians will play Sweden in the quarters on Friday at 5 a.m. PT.

Canada and the U.S. are heavily favored to face each other again in the gold-medal game on Wednesday, Feb. 16th at 8:10 p.m. PT.

The Americans won Olympic Gold four years ago when they edged the Canadians in a shootout.

(Canada started this year’s tournament with three convincing victories: 6-1 over the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), 11-1 over Finland, and 12-1 over Switzerland).

24-year-old Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George competes Wednesday in the Olympic women’s snowboard cross individual event. She is one of four women on the Canadian snowboard cross team at the Beijing Games.

Emily Dickson of Burns Lake placed 70th and Sarah Beaudry of Prince George finished 80th out of 87 in the Olympic women’s 15 km individual Biathlon race on Monday.

The 24-year-old Dickson made her Olympic debut.

Earlier, the 27-year-old Beaudry was part of the Canadian mixed 4 x 6 km Biathlon relay team that placed 14th out of 20 on Saturday.

Next up for Dickson and Beaudry will be the women’s 7.5 km Biathlon Sprint on Friday (1:00 a.m. PT).

Canada remains with six medals, a gold, a silver, and four bronze as Canadian athletes fell short of the podium on the 4th day of the Olympics.

WHL:

The Prince George Cougars will have home games for each of the next five weekends.

The Cougars are scheduled to host the Vancouver Giants on Friday and Saturday.

The (18-23-2-1) Cougars are 3rd in the B.C. Division and 6th in the Western Conference, five points ahead of the (16-23-2) Giants.

Prince George is 3-17-1-1 against the top five teams in the Western Conference and 15-6-1-0 against the four teams below them in the Conference.

The (21-9-3-5) Prince George Spruce Kings visit the (28-5-2-1) Salmon Arm Silverbacks on Wednesday.

The Spruce Kings have earned at least a point in each of their last 15 games.

They have not lost in regulation since December 18th when they fell 2-1 to the Vipers in Vernon.

Prince George is third out of nine teams in the Interior Division, three points ahead of West Kelowna.

Salmon Arm is first, a point in front of Penticton and nine ahead of Prince George.

BC Elite Hockey League: (AAA)

(U18 Male) 

The U18 Cariboo Cougars host the Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday night at 4:30 and Sunday morning at 10:30 at Kin 1.

The (13-11-1-3) Cougars are 5th out of 10 teams while the (20-8-1-1) Canadians are 2nd.

This past weekend, Cariboo beat the South Island Royals 7-3 and 4-12.

(U17 Male)

The U17 Cariboo Cougars entertain the Vancouver NE Chiefs Saturday night at 6:00 at Kin 2 and Sunday morning at 7:15 at Kin 1.

The (12-13-0-1) Cougars are in 7th-place in the 10-team division while the (22-6) Chiefs are 2nd.

This past weekend, Cariboo lost to the Greater Vancouver Canadians 8-2 and 7-1.

(U15 Male)

The U15 Cariboo Cougars visit the South Island Royals Saturday night at 6:00 and Sunday morning at 7:00 in Victoria.

The (5-15-0-2) Cougars are 9th out of 10 teams while the (8-12) Royals are 8th.

This past weekend, Cariboo lost to the first-place Vancouver Northwest Hawks 10-2 and 7-2.

(U18 Female)

The U18 Northern Capitals female hockey team is idle until the Feb. 25th-27th weekend when they host the Greater Vancouver Comets in a three-game set in Prince George.

The (18-6-0-3) Capitals are second out of five teams while the (4-21-1) Comets are last.

This past weekend, the Caps went 3-for-3 beating Greater Vancouver 3-1 and Vancouver Island 6-2 and 5-3.

Canada West basketball:

The UNBC Timberwolves visit the UBC Okanagan Heat Saturday afternoon at 2:00 in Canada West men’s basketball.

The UNBC men are 5-10 while UBCO is 2-12.

The UNBC women’s basketball team is idle until they host the UBC Thunderbirds on Thursday night, February 17th at 6:00.

The UNBC women are 6-7 on the season while UBC is 5-9.

The (29-23) Raptors increase their winning streak to six games.

Curling:

Kerri Einarson will represent Canada at the 2022 Women’s World Curling Championship in Prince George from March 19th-27th.

The Einarson won the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts for a third straight year, defeating Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville in the final 9-6 in Thunder Bay.

 

NFL:

The Super Bowl will be played Sunday in Los Angeles with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. PT.

The LA Rams are 4-point favorites to beat the Cincinnati Bengals.
