Olympics:

Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George has won an Olympic medal.

The 24-year-old O’Dine, who is ranked 12th in the World Cup standings, captured bronze in the women’s snowboard cross final.

She won her first-round, quarterfinal, and semifinal races to advance to the final four where she placed third.

O’Dine is the first athlete from Prince George to capture an Olympic medal.

The second-best Canadian in the competition was Tess Critchlow of Big White, B.C. who finished 6th.

The 26-year-old Critchlow was born in Prince George.

The next Olympic race for O’Dine will be the mixed team snowboard cross event on Saturday.

Canada won another medal today (Wednesday) as short-track-speedskater Steven Dubois of Terrebonne, Quebec took silver in the men’s 1,500 metres.

Canadian athletes have eight medals, one gold, two silver, and five bronze.

The Canadian women’s Olympic hockey team will play Sweden in the quarterfinals on Friday at 5 a.m. PT.

Canada went 4-0 in the round-robin (4-2 over the USA, 6-1 over the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), 11-1 over Finland, and 12-1 over Switzerland).

Canada and the U.S. are heavily favored to face each other again in the gold-medal game on Wednesday, Feb. 16th at 8:10 p.m. PT.

The Americans won Olympic Gold four years ago when they edged the Canadians in a shootout.

Sarah Beaudry of Prince George and Emily Dickson of Burns Lake will compete in the women’s 7.5 km Biathlon Olympic Sprint on Friday (1:00 a.m. PT).

The 24-year-old Dickson placed 70th and the 27-year-old Beaudry ended up 80th out of 87 in the women’s 15 km individual race on Monday.

In addition, Beaudry was part of the Canadian mixed 4 x 6 km Biathlon relay team that finished 14th out of 20 on Saturday.

Thatcher Demko made 35 saves for the Canucks who were outshot 36-29.

The (21-20-6) Canucks host the (16-17-6) New York Islanders tonight at 7:30.

BCHL:

The (21-9-3-5) Prince George Spruce Kings visit the (28-5-2-1) Salmon Arm Silverbacks tonight.

The Spruce Kings have earned at least a point in each of their last 15 games.

They have not lost in regulation since December 18th when they fell 2-1 to the Vipers in Vernon.

Prince George is third out of nine teams in the Interior Division, one point ahead of West Kelowna.

Salmon Arm is first, a point in front of Penticton and nine ahead of Prince George.

WHL:

The Prince George Cougars will have home games for each of the next five weekends.

The Cougars are scheduled to host the Vancouver Giants on Friday and Saturday.

The Giants, who have lost six straight, have had their last two games postponed, (including one tonight in Kelowna) due to WHL COVID-19 Protocols impacting Vancouver.

The (18-23-2-1) Cougars are 3rd in the B.C. Division and 6th in the Western Conference, five points ahead of the (16-23-2) Giants.

Prince George is 3-17-1-1 against the top five teams in the Western Conference and 15-6-1-0 against the four teams below them in the Conference.

BC Elite Hockey League: (AAA)

(U18 Male) 

The U18 Cariboo Cougars host the Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday night at 4:30 and Sunday morning at 10:30 at Kin 1.

The (13-11-1-3) Cougars are 5th out of 10 teams while the (20-8-1-1) Canadians are 2nd.

The U17 Cariboo Cougars entertain the Vancouver NE Chiefs Saturday night at 6:00 at Kin 2 and Sunday morning at 7:15 at Kin 1.

The (12-13-0-1) Cougars are in 7th-place in the 10-team division while the (22-6) Chiefs are 2nd.

The U15 Cariboo Cougars visit the South Island Royals Saturday night at 6:00 and Sunday morning at 7:00 in Victoria.

The U18 Northern Capitals female hockey team is idle until the last weekend of the month when they host the Greater Vancouver Comets in a triple header. Games are scheduled for Feb 25th at 6:45 p.m. at Kin 1, Feb 26th at 5:45 p.m. at Kin 2, and Feb. 27th at 8:15 a.m. at Kin 2.

The (18-6-0-3) Capitals are second out of five teams while the (4-21-1) Comets are last.

Canada West basketball:

The UNBC Timberwolves visit the UBC Okanagan Heat Saturday afternoon at 2:00 in Canada West men’s basketball.

The UNBC men are 5-10 while UBCO is 2-12.

The UNBC women’s basketball team hosts the UBC Thunderbirds on Thursday night, February 17th at 6:00.

The UNBC women are 6-7 on the season while UBC is 5-9.

NBA:

The (29-23) Toronto Raptors are riding a six-game winning streak.

Curling:

Kerri Einarson will represent Canada at the 2022 Women’s World Curling Championship in Prince George from March 19th-27th.

The Einarson team won the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts for a third straight year, defeating Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville 9-6 in the final in Thunder Bay.

 

NFL:

The Super Bowl will be played Sunday in Los Angeles with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. PT.

The LA Rams are 4-point favorites to beat the Cincinnati Bengals.
