Olympics:

Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George has her second Olympic bronze medal.

The 24-year-old O’Dine combined with Eliot Grondin of Quebec for a third place finish in mixed team snowboard cross.

This is the first time the mixed event has been held at the Olympics.

It is Canada’s 13th medal in Beijing and eighth bronze (to go along with a gold and four silver).

Three days earlier, O’Dine earned bronze in the women’s snowboard cross to become the first Prince George athlete to capture an Olympic medal.

Sarah Beaudry of Prince George placed 80th and Emily Dickson of Burns Lake finished 81st in a field of 89 Friday in the women’s 7.5 km Biathlon Olympic Sprint.

Earlier in the week, the 24-year-old Dickson was 70th and the 27-year-old Beaudry ended up 80th out of 87 in the women’s 15 km individual race on Monday.

In addition, Beaudry was part of the Canadian mixed 4 x 6 km Biathlon Olympic relay team that finished 14th out of 20 last weekend (Feb 5th).

The Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team is 1-1 after a 4-2 loss to the U.S.A.

In women’s Olympic hockey, Canada crushed Sweden 11-0 and the U.S.A. beat the Czech Republic 4-1 to advance to the semifinals which will be played on Sunday and Monday.

Canada and the U.S. are heavily favored to face each other again in the gold-medal game on Wednesday at 8:10 p.m. PT.

The Americans won Olympic Gold four years ago when they edged the Canadians in a shootout.

WHL:

Vancouver Giants  4  Prince George Cougars  1

Jesper Vikman made 34 saves to help the Giants end a six-game losing streak before 1,670 fans at CN Centre.

He lost his shutout bid when Carter MacAdams scored for P.G. with just 48 seconds left in the game.

It was the 4th straight loss for the Cougars, who have only scored five goals in that losing skid.

Up 1-0 after the first and second periods, the Giants put the game away scoring twice early in the third just 51 seconds apart.

The (18-24-2-1) Cougars host the (17-23-2) Giants again tonight.

Prince George is 3rd in the B.C. Division and 6th in the Western Conference, three points ahead of Vancouver.

The Cougars are 3-17-1-1 against the top five teams in the Western Conference and 15-7-1-0 against the four teams below them in the Conference.

The Spruce Kings scored two unanswered goals in the third period before 882 fans.

The (23-9-3-5) Spruce Kings have earned at least a point in each of their last 17 games.

They have not lost in regulation since December 18th when they fell 2-1 to the Vipers in Vernon.

Prince George is third in the Interior Division, three points ahead of West Kelowna.

(U18 Male) 

The U18 Cariboo Cougars host the Greater Vancouver Canadians tonight at 4:30 and Sunday morning at 10:30 at Kin 1.

The (13-11-1-3) Cougars are 5th out of 10 teams while the (20-8-1-1) Canadians are 2nd.

The U17 Cariboo Cougars entertain the Vancouver NE Chiefs tonight at 6:00 at Kin 2 and Sunday morning at 7:15 at Kin 1.

The (12-13-0-1) Cougars are in 7th-place in the 10-team division while the (22-6) Chiefs are 2nd.

The U15 Cariboo Cougars visit the South Island Royals tonight at 6:00 and Sunday morning at 7:00 in Victoria.

The (18-6-0-3) Capitals are second out of five teams while the (4-21-1) Comets are last.

The UNBC Timberwolves visit the UBC Okanagan Heat this afternoon at 2:00 in Canada West men’s basketball.
