Olympics:

Short-track speedskater Steven Dubois won his second Olympic medal by finishing third in the men’s 500 metres.

Dubois, from Terrebonne, Quebec earlier took silver in the men’s 1,500 metres.

The Canadian women’s Olympic hockey team will play Switzerland in the semifinals tonight (Sunday) at 8:10 PT.

The other semi has the USA against Finland Monday at 5:10 a.m. PT.

The winners will meet in the gold-medal game on Wednesday at 8:10 p.m. PT.

The Americans won Olympic Gold four years ago when they edged the Canadians in a shootout.

The Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team is 2-1 after a 5-0 victory over China.

The same two teams will meet again Tuesday in the qualification round with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals.

Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George will bring home two bronze medals from the Olympics.

The 24-year-old O’Dine combined with Eliot Grondin of Quebec for a third place finish (Friday night PT) in mixed team snowboard cross.

This is the first time a mixed event has been held at the Olympics.

Three days earlier, O’Dine earned bronze in the women’s snowboard cross to become the first Prince George athlete to capture an Olympic medal.

Sarah Beaudry of Prince George placed 80th and Emily Dickson of Burns Lake finished 81st in a field of 89 Friday in the women’s 7.5 km Biathlon Olympic Sprint.

Earlier, (on Monday, Feb 7th)  the 24-year-old Dickson was 70th and the 27-year-old Beaudry ended up 80th out of 87 in the women’s 15 km individual race.

In addition, Beaudry was part of the Canadian mixed 4 x 6 km Biathlon Olympic relay team that finished 14th out of 20 (on Saturday, Feb 5th).

 

WHL:

Jesper Vikman made 24 saves for the (18-23-2) Giants who swept the weekend doubleheader before 2,051 fans at CN Centre.

He lost his shutout bid for the second straight night when Carter MacAdams scored for P.G. in the final minute of the game (32 seconds left).

Payton Mount scored the winning goal shorthanded late in the second period and added an assist.

Special teams were the difference on Saturday, as the Giants scored once on the power-play and picked up two shorthanded goals, the last into an empty net.

It was the 5th straight loss for the Cougars, who have only scored six goals in that losing skid.

Prince George has not scored more than two goals in each of its last 10 games (record of 1-8-1 over that stretch).

The (18-25-2-1) Cougars visit the (26-11-1-3) Kelowna Rockets on Wednesday before hosting the Rockets Friday and Saturday.

Prince George is 3rd in the B.C. Division and 6th in the Western Conference, one point ahead of Vancouver with the Giants holding three games in hand.

The Cougars are 3-17-1-1 against the top five teams in the Western Conference and 15-8-1-0 against the four teams below them in the Conference.

Jesper Vikman made 34 saves to help the Giants end a six-game losing streak before 1,670 fans at CN Centre.

The Spruce Kings outshot the Wild 41-26 before 682 fans at the RMCA.

The (23-9-3-6) Spruce Kings have earned at least a point in each of their last 18 games.

They have not lost in regulation since December 18th when they fell 2-1 to the Vipers in Vernon.

Prince George is third in the Interior Division, three points ahead of West Kelowna.
