“Unreliable and problematic”: Bear resistant garbage cart pilot project a failure

In 2019, the City of Prince George started a pilot project providing bear resistant garbage carts to residents in an area of the Hart Highlands.

At Monday’s city council meeting, an update was provided on the project.

“The results of the pilot project after the three-year duration indicate the locking mechanism is unreliable and problematic,” said Director of Civic Operations Blake McIntosh said.

“Approximately eight percent of the carts had experienced latch failures, on top of the unpredictability of frozen mechanisms.”

The carts will not be used in other parts of the city.

McIntosh said the city will continue to investigate other bear resistant cart options that are better suited for winter conditions.

He added residents can use things like bungee cords or ratchet straps to help keep their lids closed, but they need to be removed when they are put out to the curb.
