First period penalties plague Cougars against Tri-City

It’s been a trip south of the border to forget so far for the PG Cougars, as they fell 4-3 to the Tri-City Americans last night. (Saturday)

The Cats dropped their fourth in a row in front of 4,031 fans at the Toyota Centre in Kennewick, Washington.

The Cougars found themselves in penalty trouble early on, taking four penalties in the first period, including a double-minor for high sticking in the final two minutes of the frame.

The Americans took advantage, scoring three times in the first, including a pair of powerplay markers.

The Cougars battled back, with a pair of powerplay goals of their own from Chase Wheatcroft and Koehn Ziemmer in the second period.

“Some unfortunate penalties on our end that we don’t need to take, especially with guys down,” said Cougars Assistant Coach Carter Rigby on last night’s post-game show on 94.3 The Goat.

“We found a way in the second, came out and get within one there, and just didn’t have enough.”

Jordan Gavin extended the Tri-City lead to 4-2 with 6:23 left to go in the third.

Carter MacAdams brought the Cats back within one with 3:17 remaining in the game.

“[We] had chances late on rushes late in the third, and unfortunately didn’t grab a point here,” Rigby said.

“Nonetheless, pretty solid group effort from guys that are sick and unhealthy but found a way to compete, and it shows tonight.”

The Cougars (14-14-1) now sit eight points behind the Kamloops Blazers (16-6-3-2) in the BC Division standings.
