Day of Mourning ceremony to be held in Prince George Friday

The annual National Day of Mourning, where workers who have lost their lives or become seriously injured or ill in the workplace are remembered and honoured, is tomorrow (Friday, April 28).

Prince George will be holding its ceremony on the corner of Queensway and Patricia from 10:30 until 2:00.

According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health (CCOH) and Safety, 1,081 fatalities were recorded in Canada in 2021 – the hefty majority of whom were males 25 or over.

“Add to these fatalities the 277,217 accepted claims (an increase of 23,820 from the previous year) for lost time due to a work-related injury or disease, including 34,548 from workers aged 15-24, and the fact that these statistics only include what is reported and accepted by the compensation boards, there is no doubt that the total number of workers impacted is even greater,” the CCOH said.
