Tire Stewardship BC collecting tires to recycle at weekend Junk in the Trunk sale

The largest garage sale in Northern BC is coming up this weekend in the CN Centre parking lot, but there will be more than just shopping to take part in.

Tire Stewardship BC (TSBC) will be present at the lot, giving people a chance to drop off their old tires to be recycled.

Rosemary Sutton, TSBC’s Executive Director, told My PG Now both the rims and rubber from old tires across BC are recycled in Delta and re-sold as new products.

One such example will only be a couple hundred meters away from the sale – the mats on the floors of the CN Centre dressing rooms were created with 575 recycled tires.

“All of it gets recycled in British Columbia, but now we are creating markets for this material. It is a real success story for this program,” Sutton said.

The program is the oldest of its kind in Canada, she said before it was around these unwanted tires would end up in the landfill.

She said on top of arena flooring, your old tire could end up as a part of a gymnasium, a truck bed liner, or a mat used in a horse trailer or stall.

If you are unable to make it to Junk in the Trunk, Tire Stewardship BC has 20 return sites in Prince George that are operational all times of the year – you can find them with a quick search here.

There will also be a bike swap and a place to shred your papers by donation at the sale.

Junk in the Trunk is Saturday morning (April 29) from 9:00 until 1:00 at the CN Centre.
