CONE ZONE PROGRAM ENTERS FIFTH YEAR

Worksafe BC’s “Cone Zone” campaign is entering it’s fifth year.

The initiative is aimed at improving the safety of roadside workers in the province.

Manager of Transportation and Road Safety, Mark Ordeman says this year’s campaign features a new on-line tool kit for workers.

“Put together a tool kit that provides a lot of resources around what roadside hazards look like, given those work hazards what work zone preparation should look like and what kind of work safe procedures they should be doing when on the roadway.”

Ordeman adds there have been too many deaths or injuries involving cone zone workers over the past decade.

“Looking at the most recent 10 years from 2005 to 2014 we have seen 15 roadside workers killed and another 223 injured significantly in a way that stops them from working and has them rehabilitating some kind of injury.”

The kit and additional driver tips can be found at www.conezonebc.com.

It also includes resources for landscaping and utility repairs where a traffic control person is not required.

The program was launched in 2011.
