Golf course damaged after fourth attack

The owner of the Alder Hills Golf Course has been left looking for answers after a vandal ravaged the course’s greens.

The person responsible is pouring some kind of grass killer on the greens- damaging 14 out of 18 greens in the August 10 attack.

“This attack requires a good deal of skill and knowledge to pull off,” says owner Lee Sexsmith, “The person did not book ahead or leave a name, the attacks happened in the middle of the day at a time that usually isn’t that busy.”

The recent attack is the fourth in a number of acts of vandalism that span over two years, and Sexsmith says he simply can’t afford thousands of dollars in re-sodding costs.

“It’s such an extensive area that needs to be replaced. The only thing we can do is let it finish dying and rot, and re-seed it and sand it when the chemical dissipates,” explains Sexsmith, “We’ll have grass again by the fall, but it’ll be looking pretty crappy in the spring, and it’ll be midsummer next year before we have a nice putting green again.”

The course is still open and playable, but the vandalism is tough on a staff trying to provide the best experience possible.

“We’re so embarrassed about this vandalism, but we can’t really say too much other than we’re trying to keep them as good as we can.”

But Sexsmith himself has a few theories on what’s going on.

“It’s no coincidence that Alder Hills has been attacked Four times in the past two years. Someone has an agenda, and it involves just the par-3 business. No other golf course has been hit like ours has, and there’s only one other par-3 facility in Prince George.”

Anyone with information regarding the incidents is asked to contact Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
