WHL:

Portland Winterhawks  2  Prince George Cougars  1  (DBL OT)

Josh Davies scored at 5:40 of the second overtime period to give the Winterhawks the victory and the Western Conference Championship four games to two.

The goalies were outstanding as Jan Špunar made 48 saves for Portland and Josh Ravensbergen blocked 36 shots for P.G. before 6,016 fans at CN Centre.

Nate Danielson opened the scoring for the Winterhawks with a minute left in the 2nd period and Borya Valis tied the game for the Cougars at 5:45 of the 3rd.

Portland advances to the WHL Championship Series against the winner of tonight’s game in Saskatoon between the Blades and the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Blades and Warriors are tied 3-3 in the Eastern Conference Final with five of the six games decided in overtime.

Prince George Cougars winger Hunter Laing has been named WHL Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.

Laing scored his first playoff goal on Thursday helping the Cougars to a 6-1 victory over Portland in Game 5 of the Western Conference Championship.

The 6-foot-6, 192-pound Lang is ranked 86th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting in the agency’s final rankings ahead of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

There are two NHL playoff games tonight (Tuesday): Carolina at New York Rangers (4:00) and Colorado at Dallas (6:30).

The Rangers lead the Hurricanes 1-0 while the Stars and Avalanche are just starting their second round series.

The Vancouver Canucks host the Edmonton Oilers Wednesday night at 7:00 in their opener.

On the NHL coaching front, former Vancouver Canucks bench boss Travis Green has been hired as head coach of the Ottawa Senators while in Winnipeg Rick Bowness has announced his retirement as head coach of the Jets.

PG Kodiaks football:

The Prince George Kodiaks junior football team has added Chris Szarka to its coaching staff under Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Jamie Boreham.

Szarka was a fullback for 13 years in the CFL with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, earning a Grey Cup ring in 2007.

The Kodiaks hold their Spring Evaluation Camp this weekend (Friday to Sunday) with their annual Black and Gold Scrimmage Sunday afternoon at 1:00 at Masich Place Stadium.
