Prince George City Council is calling for a “joint, regional response to local challenges.”
At tonight’s (Monday) meeting Prince George City Council voted on the following recommendation:
“That Council supports the Mayor or the Chair of the Standing Committee of Intergovernmental Affairs organizing meetings with local representatives from all orders of government with the goal of developing an MOU to help address regional gaps, as detailed in the report dated July 17th, 2024, titled, “The Need for a Joint Regional Response to Local Challenges” from the Mayor.”
The report provides council with an opportunity to convene a set of meetings to organize local representatives from all orders of government to advocate on local issues.
Mayor Simon Yu was absent from the meeting, but Councillor Garth Frizzell, the Chair of Council’s Standing Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs spoke on the report.
Frizzell noted the Standing Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs met with Cariboo-Prince George MP Todd Doherty, as well as Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond and Prince George-Mackenzie MLA Mike Morris.
“A number of the issues, as we all know around this table, that have been facing the municipality are not limited to local government jurisdiction,” Frizzell said.
“This provincial, this is federal, this is First Nations.”
Council invited MLA Bond to speak during the meeting.
“I think it was such a critical discussion at our last meeting as we realize that we all serve the same residents,” Bond said.
“We know that by bringing all of our levels of government together, we can make a difference. Our voices are more powerful when they’re in a collective.”
Council unanimously supported the recommendation, and the Mayor’s office, with support of the City Administration, will start work and return to Council with the proposed Memorandum of Understanding for consideration.
