The Prince George Horse Society is asking the city to take the reigns.
At monday’s council meeting the Society requested the city take care of their utility bills for the next 3 years.
Recent rate hikes have made it hard for the society to keep up.
“For our utilities right now we’re paying 3,800 dollars a month.” said Horse Society President Melanie Forster. “If you turn back the clock five years we were just around the 2,000 dollar mark.”
The outdoor arena at the fairgrounds was originally built for the 1990 BC Summer Games in Prince George, with many of the other facilities dating back to the 1950’s. With the city’s help the society would look to invest in upgrades.
“We’re going to need a little bit of help so that the money we would normally pay to utilities, we can turn around and put it back into the facility.” said Forster.
She says further upgrades to the facilities would help in Prince George’s bid for the 2020 BC Summer Games.
Council is currently reviewing the request.
