ICBC Urges Caution to Winter Drivers

With Winter looming, ICBC is asking residents to drive more cautiously and adjust to the changing weather conditions.

The provincial auto-insurer is stressing the importance of increasing your following distance to avoid potential crashes.

“Speed-related crashes that result in injury or fatality increase by over 110 percent between November and January, totaling 45 crashes each of these months” said Dianna Pozer with ICBC.

According to Pozer, many of these crashes were preventable.

“One of the biggest reasons for the up-tick in crashes is because people don’t drive to the conditions” said Pozer. “They drive too fast for the conditions and that’s what’s causing most of the speed related crashes.”

Pozer adds you should check your tire pressure regularly and use headlights when visibility is poor.

Police around the province will be looking for drivers travelling at unsafe speeds throughout November.
