Spruce Kings give up three third period goals in loss to Cowichan

Some late-game capital punishment cost the Prince George Spruce Kings two points on the road.

A trio of goals in the last 1:30 seconds of the third period saw the Cowichan Valley Capitals slither past the Spruce Kings by a 5-2 score on Friday night at the Cowichan Community Centre in Duncan.

Tyler Rowland’s fifth goal of the BCHL season at 18:21 of third period unlocked a 2-2 tie as he solved PG netminder Colin Reay.

Gavin Rocha added the insurance marker forty seconds later followed by an empty-net marker courtesy of Hunter Yanick.

The Capitals held a 1-0 lead in the first period as Ryder Dembo accepted a Slade Firkus pass beating Reay.

Ozbej Rep notched his first of two goals in the contest at 2:40 of the second period at even-strength assisted by Evan Bellamy and River Arnason.

Trace Frieden put the Caps back on top five-minutes later making it 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Rep added his second of the game with less than seven minutes remaining to even the score at 2-2.

Cowichan Valley outshot PG 43-29. Both teams went a combined 0-for-6 on the power-play.

Reay made 39 saves in defeat while his counterpart, Jack Hirshorn (Capitals) stopped 27 pucks in the win.

The Capitals improve to 15-5-1-0 while PG falls to 10-9-0-0.

Both teams play again tomorrow (Saturday) in Duncan at 7pm.
