T-Wolves WBB pick up first win against UFV; UNBC MBB blown out by Cascades

It starts with one.

A 25-point performance from Viiktoria Filatova on 11-for-19 shooting gave the UNBC Timberwolves a 68-63 road victory Friday night against the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford.

Spanish rookie Aurora Cabrera enjoyed her best Canada West women’s basketball game to date, tallying 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Hazel Phillips also tallied 10 points off the bench in a semi-home game for her as she is from Langley.

UNBC out-rebounded Fraser Valley 47-35 to improve to 1-7 on the campaign.

Julia Tuchscherer led the Cascades in points with 25 to go along with 12 rebounds.

The Timberwolves bench outscored UFV’s 19-5.

In men’s action, UNBC dropped its fifth-straight losing 89-60 against the Cascades (4-4).

A big reason for the sub-par performance was the absence of leading scorer Evgeny Baukin who was out due to an upper-body injury.

Fraser Valley’s balanced attack allowed four players to reach double-digit points.

Dario Lopez led the way with 20 while Bennett O’Connor (16), Ismel Hernandez (11) and Dilver Randhawa (17) tallied 10 points or more.

Haukur Davidsson had a game-high 10 points for UNBC in a losing cause (2-6).

Justin Sunga and Milan Pasquale also chipped in with nine points each.

The Timberwolves turned the ball over 22 times compared to UFV’s nine.

Fraser Valley outscored UNBC 46-23 in the second half.

Both varsity basketball teams complete their double-header against the Cascades tomorrow (Saturday) in Abbotsford.
