Prince George City Council will hear a report on results of a survey focused on public washroom access in the downtown area at tomorrow’s (Monday) meeting.
According to the report, the City conducted an online survey from February 9 to March 2, which received 1,512 responses.
This survey consisted of seven questions seeking input on perceived need, preferred locations, potential delivery models, design considerations, and whether the City should prioritize funding for installation and ongoing operations.
According to the report, public perspective is divided. 51.59 per cent of respondents indicated more publicly accessible washrooms are needed in downtown Prince George, while 42.99 per cent felt the additional facilities are not needed. The remaining 5.42 per cent were not sure.
The division was also seen in responses when asked if the City should prioritize construction and ongoing funding for a downtown public washroom.
42.39 per cent of respondents said no, 32.31 per cent said yes, while 21.76 per cent said it would depend on cost.
Responses on preferred approaches were varied, with integrating a public washroom into an existing civic facility received the most support at 24.4 per cent, followed by a staffed washroom at Canada Games Plaza at 22.6 per cent.
A full breakdown of the survey results can be found here.
The report also includes three options for possible next steps:
- Option 1 – Receive for Information: Maintain status quo
- Option 2 – Proceed with planning and report back: Identify a preferred approach which could include new infrastructure and/or utilizing existing facilities, and direct administration to return to Council with capital and operating cost estimates.
- Option 3 – Proceed with funding: Direct staff to add as a funded project incorporated into the proposed 2027 capital plan.
Other items to be discussed at tomorrow’s meeting includes a presentation from the Rocky Mountain Rangers, and a potential Union of BC Municipalities resolution surrounding northern and rural homeowner benefit changes.
