Spare Me: PG bowlers aiming to strike the lights out at Youth National Championship

A pair of bowlers from Prince George are Winnipeg-bound for the Youth Bowl Canada National Championship, which kicks off on Monday.

Jacinda Trenholm and Kyra Thurston clinched their spot after winning gold down in Vancouver claiming nine out of ten points.

Trenholm, who will be making her first appearance at nationals said getting to this point was always the goal.

“At the beginning of the year we put our heads together to try and make it to nationals and that was our ultimate goal for our last year is to become partners and get to a national level this year.”

“We have both been in bowling for about 15 years. I got into it from my family and it’s a family I have also created through bowling. The connections I have had through bowling in itself – it has honestly been amazing and to this it’s good to have the confidence to shoot for the gold at nationals.”

Trenholm expects the intensity to ramp up once the tournament gets rolling.

“It’s a totally different ballpark at nationals. It is more intense and there is a lot of competition and a lot of energy that is kind of hard to rally. It will take a bit of getting used to for the first one or two days but after that it goes back to the game that we love and practiced for so long.”

Thurston, who will make her sixth trip to nationals, says the competition just to represent the province was no easy feat.

“Going down to Grandview with just the competitors in B.C. – those are some of the top competitors we went against. I’d say it was a pretty hard-fought battle and our battle is nowhere near done yet.”

For Thurston, expectations for the duo are pretty high.

“We are setting ourselves up for high expectations and not only represent B.C. but also our hometown Prince George and make everybody proud.”

The national championship runs until Wednesday (May 6th).
