CUPE Local 3742 President Paula Bass was left surprised after finding out a receptionist under union with School District 57 was let go.
Superintendent Jameel Aziz issued a public apology at the School District’s Board meeting on May 12th, after he had originally stated there would be no CUPE reductions, adding he was more focused on the school environment and often forgetting that some staff at the office are CUPE staff.
He also clarified it wasn’t a financial based decision, but one based on their efforts on finding efficiencies and continuing to put in new systems.
Bass said the apology highlights another issue for the union.
“I think that CUPE members often feel unseen in the district. It is a large problem for us that we don’t have a lot of morale around, and to have that almost affirmed by the Superintendent was a little hard to take.”
Bass added that she’s not blind to the fact that technology will change the School District, but is struggling with the lack of training and opportunity given to the person let go when other positions were available.
“During the School Board meeting, the Superintendent also indicated that this probably would not be the only position that changes or is eliminated due to A.I. and different technology.”
“I think as an organization, there’s an obligation to bring your employees along that path with you.”
She said the union is in active discussion with the Human Resources team to see if they can find a new position to work in, however, if that doesn’t happen, there’s a slight breach in the collective agreement they they will pursue through grievance.
Bass hopes Aziz and administration have a look at employee relationships, and look after the people that look after them.
