Prince George City Council approved the installation of commemorative crosswalks honouring veterans at three locations in the City.
According to a staff report presented to Council at last night’s (Monday) meeting, the initiative is proposed in partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion to ensure all designs meet national heritage standards and provincial transportation guidelines.
Three sites were selected based on proximity to veteran-centric landmarks:
- Ospika Boulevard at CN Centre Access (site of a military training facility during WWII)
- George Street at 6th Avenue (near Veterans Plaza)
- Dagg Road at Glenview Drive (near Darren Fitzpatrick Park)
Director of Civic Operations Blake McIntosh said these locations were presented to city staff by the Legion.
He added the regulatory white markings would be standard paint, but the coloured portions would be a high-durability cold plastic paint.
“The two locations that see lower volume traffic should survive relatively well,” McIntosh said. “Ospika, given the volume of traffic might be more of a challenge in future years.”
According to the staff report, the estimated additional annual cost to implement the crosswalks with standard pavement marking is $2,000.
The estimated additional cost for the high-durability cold plastic paint for the three crosswalks is estimated at a combined $15,500, and would be redone every three to five years.
McIntosh added they’re looking at installing the crosswalks this year.
The installation of the crosswalks was approved unanimously.
