City Council issues new temporary use permit for Third Avenue transitional housing facility

Prince George City Council has granted a second temporary use permit for a transitional housing facility.

The facility in question sits at 397 Third Avenue, and a three-year temporary use permit was issued for the facility in April 2024.

The facility includes 43 temporary modular homes for the unhoused community.

According to a staff report to Council, the applicant, BC Housing, is applying a year in advance of the expiration of the current permit to ensure funding can be secured for the permit extension.

“BC Housing intends to continue operating the site as a transitional housing facility under the Housing, Supportive use classification until June 2030,” a rationale letter attached to the agenda states. “BC Housing will continue to work with the City and our other partners to have long-term housing solutions in place prior to the expiry of both the lease and the Temporary Use Permit.”

The rationale letter said rezoning is not being pursued, as the site is not intended to serve as a permanent housing solution.

It was noted by City staff there have been no complaints to date about the operation of the site.
