Prince George City Council has approved the submission of an expression of interest for the Mini Peaks Legacy Project.
According to a staff report to Council, the Mini Peaks Legacy Project is a significant investment in community sport across B.C.
“As part of the legacy of FIFA World Cup 2026, the Province of B.C., viaSport BC, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC are partnering to install professional-quality mini-pitches in communities throughout the province,” the report said. “The initiative will transform underused spaces into permanent, community-owned soccer facilities supported by grassroots programming designed to benefit thousands of participants for years to come.”
The report said up to 20 mini-pitches will be developed across B.C., with a minimum of two in each economic region.
“For Prince George, this is a strong fit, we continue to see demand for accessible recreation spaces, especially for youth, families and neighbourhoods where barriers to participation exist,” said Manager of Community Services and Civic Facilities Debbie Heywood. “A centrally located mini-pitch could compliment our existing parks, schools, and community centres, while expanding opportunities for free drop-in play and organized programming.”
The report tagged either Duchess Park or Ron Brent Park as potential locations.
“I think those are perfect fits,” said Councillor Ron Polillo. “If we’re successful, I see this as a real big win and a big asset for our community.”
City Council unanimously supported the submission.
