Northern B.C. ranked 3rd highest in speeding tickets given in May

B.C. Highway Patrol numbers in the month of May showed an increase in long weekend fatalities and excessive speeding.

Five people died on B.C. roads this year on the Victoria Day long weekend after 2025 had zero deaths.

“The May long weekend was one of the deadliest that we’ve had in years,” Media Relations Officer Michael McLaughlin said, “another concerning trend in the province is B.C. Highway Patrol’s excessive speeding tickets are way up.”

Last year, officers wrote over 96-hundred total speeding tickets and 403 excessive speeding tickets during the 2025 May campaign month.

This month in northern B.C., that includes most communities north of 100 Mile House, McLaughlin said 76 excessive speeding tickets with impound were given out, the third highest in the Province.

“We do have an issue with these kind of tickets in northern B.C. and this is also lining up with with those fatalities. We are seeing a disturbing trend with very serious crashes in this region. We like our open roads, we like getting on the Highway and perhaps we think the speed limit doesn’t apply to us,” McLaughlin said, “The main numbers bear that out and we really need to be safer and act better as we drive around our Northern Highways.”

Northern B.C. was also the third highest when it came to total tickets (1818) given for speeding.

“The numbers are quite high considering the low population for northern B.C. Third highest and that’s too many. Now it’s understandable that we all like our wide open Highway, it’s a big reason for living and working in the North, but it’s very dangerous. Help is very far away and when you crash at those speeds there’s not much we can do for a serious collision even when Emergency Responders are close by.”

McLaughlin noted that B.C. Highway Patrol will continue its “education through enforcement” efforts all summer and would like to remind the public that driving safely is the best way to avoid tickets and tragedy.
