“I’m still shaking right now” PG Cougars Carels on being drafted 6th overall by the Calgary Flames

Prince George Cougar defenceman Carson Carels will be joining the Calgary Flames, after being selected 6th overall in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Carels talks about the lead up to hearing his name called.

“The first three picks went by and obviously you kind of know who’s going there, and then obviously four, and to me and now it’s kind of hectic, so it’s nerve-wracking and I think I’m still shaking right now honestly.”

When speaking about being drafted to the Flames, Carels said he believes he’ll fit in quite well, and will be a good spot for him.

Last season, Carels played 58 games, tallying 20 goals and 53 assists, leading the team’s defencemen in points.

Carels also collected a bronze medal in the 2026 World Junior Championship, and committed to the University of North Dakota for next season.
