Move to Cure ALS is returning for its 23rd year in Prince George tomorrow (Sunday).
The walk is aimed at fundraising and bringing awareness to the disease, also known as Lou Gehrig Disease, for families and individuals affected.
Event Coordinator Kristi Francis talked about why this event like these are important.
“Patients living with ALS require a lot of care and support. It’s quite a devastating disease to witness your loved one go through.”
“There’s lots of equipment that’s needed for patients to make them most comfortable.”
In the north, Francis said the most difficult part is getting a diagnosis, often taking a long time to get confirmation.
She hopes to see more clinics in the north to help inform healthcare practitioners about the signs and symptoms to assess early on in the disease’s progression.
Across the province, Francis said there’s 400 people living with ALS, adding that number stays fairly stagnant as it’s a terminal disease.
The current goal for the fundraiser is $25,000, and as of this afternoon (Saturday), $9,270 has been raised.
Move to Cure ALS will take place at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park, with registration at 10:00 a.m. and the walk at 11:00 a.m.
