Local First Nations acquire former Vanderhoof sawmill property, form new industrial park

Four Indigenous communities in the Prince George-Vanderhoof area have acquired the former Canfor Plateau Sawmill Property.

It’s part of a plan to develop the newly formed Ncha Koh Industrial Park which will include BC Hydro assuming a four-year lease for Phase one of the North Coast Transmission Line.

The announcement was made today (Tuesday) by the Stellat’en, Nadleh Whut’en, Saikuz and Lheidli T’enneh First Nations.

In addition, this industrial property can provide support to leases that require power, highway access, rail access, and diversified workforce in the region.

“This ownership move elevates our ongoing commitment to support our shifting regional economy within this province. As business leaders, we will conInue to work with our surrounding communities to realize the full potential of the Ncha Koh Industrial Park site with our neighboring Nations.” said Priscilla Mueller, Saikuz Chief.

The industrial park will support local employment and skills development of both First Nations and non-First Nations people, including support for the local, provincial and federal tax base.

“This is a transformational moment for our Nation. By acquiring this strategic industrial asset, we are creating a platform for long-term economic growth, strengthening our self-determination, and ensuring that our Nation has av meaningful role in shaping the future of our regional economy.” – said Robert Mitchell, Stellat’en First Nation Chief.

A media event will be held on July 10th with dignitaries in attendance.
