Province announces free in-person legal services coming to P.G. for family violence

People experiencing family violence in Prince George will be able to access free, in-person family law services.

This expands from the existing virtual option, with the new in-person Family Law Centre to be funded by the Province, and delivered by Legal Aid BC.

It’s funded through a three-year, $29-million provincial contribution to Legal Aid BC that was announced in 2024.

Attorney General Niki Sharma said “Through the Family Law Centre, we are making it easier to access free legal support in person, closer to home, so people can find safety, stability and a path forward.”

It will offer trauma-informed services to survivors of family violence who cannot afford legal representation, covering protection orders, parenting matters, such as denial of parenting time, child support, and help with overlapping issues, such as spousal support, property division and divorce.

Virtual sessions will still be able to be accessed, including in Vanderhoof and Mackenzie.

The in-person centre is slated to open later this summer.
