Kodiaks find stride in massive win over Broncos

What a difference a week makes.

The Prince George Kodiaks found themselves on the right side of a certified schneidering, claiming a massive 65-6 win over the Kamloops Broncos at Masich Place Stadium Saturday night.

“Guys came out, played well, really just set the tempo, from the get go, and just did the little things right this week,” said Kodiaks Head Coach Ryan Bellamy.

The Kodiaks offence was clicking, and were able to consistently able to move the ball down field.

“The big thing for us was we had a lot of fundamentals that were a little bit sloppy last week, we were able to clean a lot of that up,” Bellamy said. “Biggest thing was we weren’t dropping balls like we were last week. Offensive line was giving us more time to block, quarterbacks were getting better reads, so as a team offensively, much better.”

After taking a look at a few different quarterbacks in last week’s game against the Vancouver Island Raiders, Toby Plett got the start under centre for the Kodiaks and shined.

“He really jumped up, played well,” Bellamy said. “He really did a good job of taking control of the reins of the offence and putting in a solid effort tonight.”

Plett threw three touchdown passes and powered a couple of quarterback sneaks into the endzone himself.

On the other side of the ball, the Kodiaks defence smothered the Broncos, swallowing up almost every running attack, and preventing any air offence with several interceptions.

“I couldn’t even tell you who all had them because they were coming fast and furious,” Bellamy said. “The guys were flying around, making plays and that’s really one of the things coming into the season we felt would be a strength of our team, is that secondary has some guys who can make some plays.”

“We changed some stuff on defence, it paid off, so it was a good week all week for defence in practice,” said defensiveback Aiden Leslie, who came away with three of the Kodiak interceptions.

“Quarterback, he’s a young guy but overthrowing, so that puts me in a good position to make plays and the rest of my teammates.”

Special teams were also great for the Kodiaks, with kicker Maxim Murphy going three-for-three on field goals for the day, including a 43-yarder into some tricky wind.

The Kodiaks will face the Broncos two more times this season.

In Week 4, the Kodiaks will have a tough test against the Langley Rams, who have been shot out of a cannon to start the season, claiming a 32-25 win over the reigning BCFC Champion Okanagan Sun. They’ve also picked up massive wins over the Broncos and Valley Huskers.

“Langley’s come out and shown that they’ve put together a really great team this offseason, made a big turn from where they were last season,’ Bellamy said. “It’ll be a good measuring stick for us, if we can carry this momentum, we’ve got a chance to hang with them, but they’re a skilled team and we’ll see what they’ve got when we get there.”

“We’ve got work to put in this week,” Plett said. “It’s promising, they’re coming here, we’ve got great fans here, we’ve got a great football team here, and we’ve got guys coming confident now, they know what they can do, they know they can play football.”
