UHNBC upcoming Acute Care Tower reaches new milestone

The new Acute Care Tower for the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) took another step in its planning phase.

Emily Prestmo with Northern Health wrote on Monday, the project had its preferred design concept released, placing the tower on the south side of the hospital.

She said the health authority and partners built on previous planning, while reviewing clinical needs, hospital operations, technical requirements, and design considerations to identify a solution to best support patients, staff, services, and future health care needs.

According to Northern Health, the tower aims to bring 110 beds for cardiac, mental health, substance use, and surgical services, along with additional rooms.

Prestmo said the project remains on track, with construction estimated to begin in early 2027,with plans to open in winter 2031.

More information about the preferred design concept can be found here.
