City Council approves new fibre cable project

Prince George City Council approved a project to add a new fibre optic cable for Northern Health.

City Council approved the project at last night’s meeting.

“The City operates a network of underground fibre optic cables that the City and other public organizations can use that basically allows their information to travel securely and quickly between satellite buildings that they may operate,” said Director of Finance and IT Services Kris Dalio. “Northern Health has informed us that when they break ground on the care tower before the end of the year that their current connection will be severed.”

Dalio noted Northern Health will reconnect the one that will be severed at their own cost, but they would like the second connection.

He added the estimated budget for the project is $400,000.

“We actually rent these fibre connections out to these other organizations, and with the rental revenue, we use that to expand the system and pay for itself,” Dalio said. “The reserve fund that is dedicated to that has the funds to do the project.”

The project would include drilling and running fibre along Winnipeg Street from 13th Avenue to 5th Avenue.

The project was approved unanimously.
