It was a close call for a retired firefighter who was travelling down Foothills Boulevard at the time of a fatal plane crash, where two vehicles were involved.
The deceased was from one of the two motor vehicles according to the Prince George RCMP.
Eight people are believed to have been on board of a plane that made an emergency landing about a kilometre north of North Nechako Road this afternoon (Thursday).
Eyewitness Randy Myles told Vista Radio he caught the plane out the corner of his eye.
“We were coming down the hill to go shopping and we noticed an aircraft in the sky and we said it was flying too low for a double-turbo prop and then all of a sudden he was out of sight and then when we came around the corner, we saw vehicles in the ditch.”
From there, he quickly escaped the chaos and went to the closest fire hall.
“I did a 360 and went to the fire hall up in the Hart on Highland Drive. Because I hadn’t seen any sirens, I headed into the hall and saw some guys in the truck with their lights on and flagged them down and told them they needed to call another truck.”
The Transportation Safety Board says a team of investigators will be deployed to Prince George where they will assess the occurrence.
They are expected to arrive tomorrow (Friday) morning and will have conduct of the investigation.
Foothills Boulevard has been closed to vehicle traffic in both directions and will remain that way overnight and into Friday; drivers should make plans to use alternate routes in the meantime.
